1869: Founding of the Cincinnati Red Stockings

In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first professional baseball team, forever changing the landscape of American sports. The team was formed by Harry Wright, who paid the players a salary, making the Red Stockings the first team to fully embrace professionalism in baseball. The team’s success on the field—winning 57 games in a row in its inaugural season—helped legitimize professional baseball and popularized the sport across the country.

The founding of the Cincinnati Red Stockings had a significant cultural impact on both the city and the nation. Cincinnati became known as a baseball city, with the Red Stockings paving the way for the sport's transition from an amateur pastime to a professional sport. The team’s popularity drew large crowds, helped establish Cincinnati as a sports hub, and fostered a lasting love of baseball in the region.

The legacy of the Cincinnati Red Stockings continues today with the Cincinnati Reds, who carry the distinction of being the oldest professional baseball team in the United States. The Red Stockings' pioneering role in the sport’s professionalization is a proud chapter in Cincinnati's history, showcasing the city’s impact on America’s pastime and its role in shaping modern professional sports.
